January 22 - February 27, February 11 - March 20, Over the course of five weeks, participants will explore the history of August Wilson and receive coaching from professional artists as they prepare for their performance or design presentation.

The August Wilson Youth Intensive prepares students to participate in the competition as either a performer or designer. The top twenty finalists will compete at the Goodman Theatre on May 2nd, for a chance to win scholarships to some of the top universities in Chicago and other prizes!

Classes begin on February 12 and conclude on March Participants become ambassadors for the theater in this youth leadership program. Members liaise between their peers and the Goodman, host events for young audiences and volunteer in their communities and schools. A storytelling performance workshop in which participants develop personal narrative performance pieces based on themes raised by Goodman productions, which they are then invited to perform in a public forum.

The Goodman offers at least three seven-week sessions each season, with up to 20 participants in each session. Goodman Trustee Zoraida Sambolin returns this year, swapping out her role as event emcee for the role of co-chair.

So when asked to co-chair this event, of course I was excited to do so! Continuing the education and engagement programming remotely has proven to be an essential offering to our Chicagoland community during these difficult times. Theater provides a perfect medium for the sharing of stories and perspectives and our Education and Engagement programs expand the reach and the impact of theater.

While we cannot join together in the theater right now, students across the city have still been able to engage with the performing arts by streaming Goodman productions like A Christmas Carol —An Audio Play and School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play and engaging with production study guides produced by the Education Department.
